The American 7s Football League (A7FL) has kicked off its 11th season. The season began on March 16 and will finish with Championship Sunday on June 22. A7FL offers a distinctive take on traditional American football, emphasizing safety and dynamic play.
Each team consists of seven players on the field during play. Teams are allowed up to 35 active players on their roster. In an effort to reduce head injuries, players do not wear helmets or pads. This approach encourages safer tackling techniques, similar to those used in rugby. Defensive players are not permitted to aim for opponents’ heads, enhancing player safety.
The playing field measures 120 yards in length and 37.5 yards in width, narrower than traditional football fields to suit the seven-on-seven format. Instead of traditional kickoffs, the A7FL employs a “3-on-1 throw-off,” where three players from the throwing team face one receiver from the opposing team. Standard scoring applies, with touchdowns typically worth six points. Extra point attempts are conducted via passing or running plays, as field goals are not utilized.
