He was skilled at football and ran the 100 metres in 11 seconds when he was 15. In 2007 he started boxing and enjoyed a meteoric rise. His career is at a crossroads following his shock defeat against Andy Ruiz Jr in June. Ruiz put Joshua on the canvas four times in that fight before it was stopped in the seventh round at Madison Square Garden, leaving many boxing pundits to wonder if the former Olympic champion will ever be the same again.

The elder Ruiz pushed his son into boxing, forcing him to give up baseball to study the sweet science daily. Ruiz scored one of the greatest upsets in boxing history when he stopped Joshua in the seventh round at Madison Square Garden in New York. Ruiz attracted widespread plaudits for his performance against Joshua and was a deserved victor as he claimed the WBA-Super, IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight belts. His record now stands at 33-1, and he was recently given a hero's parade in his hometown of Imperial, California. The only defeat on his slate came in the shape of a majority-decision loss to Joseph Parker in December 2016. Joshua beat Parker by unanimous decision in March last year.
