The Foro Italico in Rome will play host to the World Championships in 2022 for a second time after also welcoming the competition in 2011. It set the scene for the sport's top athletes at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Finals in 2019 and was also popular with volleyball fans when matches during the FIVB Volleyball World League in 2015 and FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship in 2018 were played at the venue.
The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships are held every two years and are one of the highlights of the sporting year, as well as a much-desired title for the players on the international beach volleyball circuit. Prior to the first tournament in 1997, there were 10 World Championships held in Rio de Janeiro every year between 1987 and 1996. Now the tournaments are held every two years, outside of the Olympic Games.
